After Snapchat, an American multimedia messaging platform, TikTok follows the suit to leverage the iPhone 12 Pro’s LiDAR scanner to enable its users with first-ever LiDAR effect. The social video app announced recently through its Twitter account stating, “To ring in 2021 we released our first Augmented Reality (AR) effect on the new iPhone 12 Pro, using LiDAR technology which allows us to create effects that interact with your environment – visually bridging the digital and physical worlds. We’re excited to develop more innovative effects in 2021!”

The effect drops in like an AR ball, similar to the Time Square’s New year Eve, with an explosion of confetti along with a floating 2021. The usage of LiDAR or light detection or radiation was initially introduced in the iPhone 5G models. TikTok described the effect as a bridge from physical to digital world, due to AR’s interaction with the user’s environment. The new feature is available globally, with few countries as an exception.
